Plays, Graduations, Freeze Watches...

We attended Lily's play on Friday night. She was playing a fox and did a fantastic job! One of her best friends played the witch, and oh my, can she scream at a high pitch... LOL.

Saturday I drove my grandmother and Rachael up to my sister's graduation- a 4.5 hour drive from my parents' house. We spent Saturday evening in church, then at Bob Evans eating dinner as a family. Rachael and I headed to bed around 12:30, but most of my siblings were up until 3 or so. Yikes.

Sunday was Shae's graduation. She graduated with honors, summa cum laude, etc...very smart gal, but makes me jealous, I will admit. I worked my butt off in college to try and make Dean's List ONCE and never even succeeded at that. Shae made it ALL semesters and was chosen to give a speech at her Baccalaureate service. Her graduation was outside and it was getting chilly but we all survived. After a dinner @ Pizza Hut, we all headed to our various homes and I came back to Big City.

Yesterday it was back to work and my co-worker is still out due to her dad being ill. Aniya and I are splitting up the mornings- she had Monday and today, and I have Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. I am technically off work on Friday due to Lily's Confirmation, but I'm going to work until noon or so to help out. Anyway, Monday morning Mac and I went to look at Aniya's apartment complex. It was really nice, and I love the fact that it has a washer/dryer hookup. We'll check out a few more apartment complexes before making a decision, though. Aniya joked during work that I was hard to have a conversation with yesterday because she asked which apartments we looked at, and I said I had no idea...then she asked what animal Lily played, and at the time I didn't know that either. Haha.

After work I had a volleyball game, and we were lucky enough to play during the one hour it didn't pour...we lost and then I left my jacket there and had to go back.

Today it's work and then a Grace Heart event...should be fun!

Give Me Five Monday 4/28

Five Things I've Been Up To

1. Apartment Hunting- I need to figure out where we're moving by the end of May, hopefully.

2. Family stuff- graduations, plays, etc...fun, but keeps me busy!

3. Working a LOT. One of our teachers' dad is dying so she was out all of last week and will be out all of this week...I'm not sure when/if she's coming back this school year? Their family definitely needs prayers. :( So yes, work...last week I worked 3 extra mornings and 4 days, this week it will be the same.

4. Volleyball- even though I don't really know how to play, I joined a team and play 3 games every Monday night. So far, we've had one FREEZING day, one beautiful day, and one rainy, cold day...haha. I do enjoy it though!!

5. Cleaning the apartment, a few times...deep cleaning, organizing, etc...It feels so good when I'm done!!

Life's Just Getting Busier...

I was hoping that this week might not be as busy as the last one, but no such luck!

Tuesday was the only day I didn't work 10 hours... after work, I went running around the lake and then went to Cheese's soccer game up north. There was a ton of excitement during the game...on the field next to where he was playing, a player on another team had either a heart attack or seizures and CPR was being done on him. The EMTs came, they got an IV started, and shortly after they wheeled him out. He was terribly pale, but awake and breathing. I can only hope that he's doing well.

On Wednesday I worked 10-6, then packed for the weekend. We have Shae's graduation, Lily's play, grandma's visit, and Amata's 20th birthday...SO crazy that I have today (Friday) off of work.

Thursday was an interesting day...Aniya and I were both SO tired. As she put it, our attention span was about 3 seconds. At least I wasn't trying to do schoolwork like her...lol. I had a short afternoon circle and then we headed outside for a few hours.

We almost lost our bunny rabbit this past week. Usually Snick explores the room next door to our classroom during the day. One particular day, we came inside about 5:30 and Snick was not back in his cage. Aniya looked EVERYWHERE, then I looked EVERYWHERE and Snick was nowhere to be found. Aniya told me that I could leave, but I decided to look just one more time for Snick. I looked in all the classrooms, bathrooms, closets...and finally found him "locked" in a closet in our multipurpose room, bunny eyes staring up at me. I have no idea how long he'd been in there!

Well, I'm off to have a busy day. I'm going to clean and vacuum my car, hopefully sans rain, then I'm going to take Amata out to eat for her birthday. We have our family birthday dinner @ 5, then Lily's play at 7:30...it's going to be a late night!

I tried an experiment today

For a while, in the afternoon at work, I tried to be professional and like an old fashioned school marm. Just for fun and to see what would happen.

It didn't work...not even for 15 minutes.

First Aniya decided that we should take the school kids to Disney World. She hit me with that plan immediately after nap time, and it was hysterical. The thought of the two of us traipsing around Disney with eighteen 4- and 5- year olds had me busting at the seams...

A few minutes later Daley asked Aniya why her hair wasn't up. Daley has hair that is, well, all over the place. Every day she comes to school looking like Pebbles, from The Flintstones. Sometimes, we call her that just for fun, but she doesn't get it. She couldn't seem to understand that during her nap, her hair had flattened, ponytail and all.

Later, outside, one of Daley's friends Nadia was tracing around Daley...she did a fantastic job, Pebbles hair and all! ;)
~~
I did stay up late last night watching Alias, it was awesome. I really enjoyed the series finale. This morning I worked early so it's been a long day...plus I had a volleyball game afterwards. We lost, but I served (over the net!!), had a few good plays, and had a great time. I'm enjoying the exercise and getting to know new people from the City.

What to do, what to do?

So, for most of last night and today I've been watching the show Alias-- season 5. I enjoyed some of the show while living on the East Coast and got most of the last season on DVD yesterday in the mail. I really want to finish the season tonight since I'm so into it...so I was planning to stay up late (2am ish...normal for me esp. on weekends!), finish it, and then get up around 8 to go running before work.

But my boss just called, sounding like she'd been sleeping, asking if I can work early tomorrow morning because one of my co-worker's fathers is in the hospital. I can, I said...but now what to do about finishing the show?? Dangit!!

And I just spilled pizza (supposed to be my dinner) all down the wall. Lovely!

Springtime

I just opened my apartment window for the first time since...October probably, to get some wonderful, fresh air.

*cough*cough*

Oh, that's right. I can't, because some idiot is smoking RIGHT near my window.

Lovely.

Just So Busy!

The past week has been crazily busy, but I am loving the springtime weather!!

Every single night after work I've had something-- Monday was a volleyball game, Tuesday a cookout with Grace Heart, Wednesday out for ice cream with my friend Lita, Thursday I went to my friend Anna's dad's house for dinner and met her family-- we had salmon, green beans, blueberry cake...it was delicious! Anna's dad is an architect and it was wonderful to spend time in the country again, basking in the glow of 70* heat and enjoying the house he and his wife custom built from a barn. A new food I got to try is Mochi-- have you ever had it? It's Japanese...here's a pic-- apparently you can get them at Trader Joe's. You can start eating them with your hands, but then they start to melt REALLY fast and you have to resort to a spoon or fork.

We had the kids outside for hours every day this week, and on Thursday pulled out the sidewalk chalk (for hopscotch) and jump ropes. It was exciting to watch the kids learn how to jump rope...some of them caught on immediately and others took a while.

On Friday afternoon, we had snack (grapes, strawberries, and yogurts) outside...the breeze (wind if you ask my South American-born co-teacher...haha) was blowing and we could hear an ice cream truck...plus, someone was grilling. Aniya and I enjoyed pretending we were at the beach, at least for a bit. I must say though...it's torture when neighbors by our school are grilling and we have to continue working!!

Once the kiddos were done with snack, we brought out some new footballs and soccer balls..so much fun to play with the older Kindergarteners, especially! Rolan and Ayden have strong arms and will make fantastic football players later in life. I was just SO glad to be outside for an extended period of time...we were outside long enough for me to get a tiny burn even! Aniya and I played volleyball a little sans kids and as she put it, what's better than playing sports, watching children, and getting paid for it all? Haha.

From Friday morning until just an hour ago or so though, I've been on the run...but I've gotten a ton done...
  • Friday morning had breakfast with my friend Anastasia-- hadn't seen her since before Christmas so it was wonderful to catch up with her!
  • Worked 11-6
  • Went for a 1.2 mile walk around the lake-- by the time I move, I hope to be running this path
  • Cleaned my car and the outside windows
  • Lost 50c in the dryer when doing laundry
  • Cleaned the bathroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom
  • Vacuumed whole apartment
  • Paid the bills
  • Wrote thank yous for Belize support letters
  • Sent money for a talk I'm going to in May
  • Went to Christian Bookstore to buy a few gifts
  • Went to the library to pick up kids' books for next week
  • Went to 5 pm Mass
I am now looking forward to relaxing until work on Monday morning...YAY for getting everything done on Friday and Saturday!!

Aloha Friday 4/18

What was the last book you’ve read and would you recommend that others read it, too?

Any of the Karen Kingsbury books! They are fantastic.

13 Things I Appreciate about my Co-Teacher

My co-teacher Aniya is most likely leaving after this school year due to scheduling problems. I am going to miss her SO much...so this post is dedicated to her!

1. We have FUN together, even though we are at work.

2. We are always laughing about something a child, usually Daley, has done...

3. She is bold...what I am striving to be!

4. She teaches me about the culture in her South American country, which is always very interesting.

5. She's not afraid to speak her mind...today, some neighbors to the school were having a cookout because it was a beautiful day, and she almost invited herself over for chicken and beer.

6.She talks to me during lunchtime even though she's supposed to be studying.

7. She offers me coupons for Kohl's and book fairs that she refuses to attend because she'll spend too much money...but c'mon...they're kids books!!!!!

8. We can talk about everything and everything to each other. I hear about her husband's ADD, late night music practices, job searches, apartment searches, and she listens to my same job/apartment issues. Today, I think we talked about a million things ranging from the kids in school, their parents, our pet bunny rabbit, the fish in our classroom, clothing, biology, sex, our parents, parties, bills, travel costs ...seriously. It's awesome. Yea, she was supposed to be studying ;)

9. She follows through with discipline and doesn't seem to miss a thing any of the children do.

10. She listens to my ideas for projects and together we come to conclusions...we are true CO-teachers.

11. She let me not do circle for the first three weeks of school because I was terrified of it...eventually, she gently let me know that she thought I was ready to do it, and that was a boost of self confidence. That was 7 months ago and I've been doing it ever since.

12. We can communicate without words...sometimes all it takes is a nod in the direction of a child and she knows what I'm talking about...and vise versa...

13. When I accepted the job at my school, I was coming from a bad nanny job and was terrified as to what I was getting myself into. Aniya instantly put me at ease and welcomed me, even though I'm sure she had some interesting first impressions of me...for that, I will be forever thankful!!

Thursday Thirteen

It's Official!

I am moving the weekend of June 6...the same day that school ends for me. We have our apartment until the end of June but my "new" (have had it for years!) job begins June 11. That gives me 4 days to clean my classroom, prepare it for my re-arrival in August, pack and move all of my belongings from the apartment, figure out what to leave in the city and keep out what I'll need for Belize, and get settled in my parents' house. It's going to be crazy, but I still have 7 weeks...7 weeks?!!? THAT'S ALL!?!?

Other happenings...Grace Heart had a cookout last night that I attended. I've been missing my GH friends lately, so it was good to see Mac, Cheese, Lexi, and everyone else. This week is so busy. I have something going on every night after work, and @ school we've been having parent teacher conferences so the kids have been wild...

off to another day of work, have a wonderful Wednesday!

Guess what?

I guess I'm moving to my parents' for the summer! I just turned down an interview here in the city, and turned in my application to work at my old college.

Summer '08 is going to be a blast (I hope!)!!!!

In other news, I joined a volleyball team for the spring season. Haha. Had the first game yesterday, and I'm awful. Can't serve at all, usually hit the ball the wrong way, but I had fun and got to meet 7 new people!! 3 of whom are teachers, too!

100 Things About Me!

My 100 Things can also be found here...enjoy!

1. My full name is Bethany Ann Philomena Bernadette. My given names are Bethany and Ann, Philomena and Bernadette are Confirmation names.

2. I do not use my siblings' real names on this blog.

3. Nor do I use my students' real names-- for obvious reasons!

4. I never got my bachelor's degree in college, because Child Development isn't offered as a Bachelor's, only an Associates. I am fine with it, as I was ready to be out of college.

5. I was born in Maine, lived there until I was 5. I then moved to central Pennsylvania where we lived until I was 12.

6. I was homeschooled, but not until 6th grade.

7. I have never been on a date. Sad, I know.

8. I finished both high school and college a semester early, in December 2003 and 2005.

9. I used to play softball and loved it. After we began homeschooling/moved again, I stopped playing and really miss it.

10. I am signed up to play volleyball this spring-- we'll see how it goes!!

11. Even though I am not afraid of heights, I do not like roller coasters. I LOVE rides like the tilt-a-whirl, aero 360 (upside down rides).

12. I am not much of a chocolate person. I mean, I enjoy it...but I don't love it as much as most women.

13. I also HATE shopping. Okay...not hate, but it's just okay.

14. When I was in first grade, I stapled my finger.

15. Growing up, my favorite Muppets character was Fozzie Bear.

16. While traveling through Scotland on a windy, rainy day, I found a Fozzie stuffed animal in the Disney store and had to get it!

17. I visited Disney World, but not until I was 20. I was on spring break with one of my friends in Florida and we spent a day in Disney.

18. I met a guy on my mission trip to NOLA that my friend Lita thinks would be perfect for me. Unfortunately, he's dating/has a crush on another girl that was on the trip. Figures.

19. I have 399 friends on Facebook. Yes, I know them all.

20. I joined Facebook in December '05, after I was done with college.

21. I have added 30 friends in the past 2 weeks, mostly people I met on my mission trip to New Orleans.

22. There is a fundraiser for my Belize mission trip today. I am skipping it because my 17 y/o brother Sam is in a play this weekend...he is singing and dancing and well, how could I miss that?!?!

23. I do not like the color pink at all, but for some reason like the layout of this blog. I guess it's because it makes me think of my good friend Jenn, who I met while living up in MA.

24. My all time favorite author is Karen Kingsbury.

25. I did not study the Montessori method in college.

26. My college didn't/doesn't even offer a course in Montessori methods, and it doesn't mention it at all in the Education program.

27. While in college, one of the 3 Musketeers (who was a "friend" at the time) gave me a book on the Montessori method and I found it interesting.

28. After my nannying job fell apart, I was looking for a place to work and just fell into the Montessori job.

29. I love my job!

30. I miss nannying at times because I had the freedom of being a stay at home mom while getting paid.

31. When I was about 10, I was hit in the nose by a metal baseball bat. My nose bled and bled for a LONG time and has never been the same.

32. A few nights ago, one of the little boys in our school was hit by a metal baseball bat. He has a hilarious story, which I'll have to post at some point.

33. When I was 12, I broke my right wrist.

34. I was at a Vacation Bible School at my friend's house. We were playing Sharks and Minnows, and I had flip flops on. The ground was wet, I slipped, and 2 girls fell on top of me.

35. My wrist was visibly broken but not open and bleeding. My mom got peas or corn...some vegetable! to use as ice.

36. I was supposed to ride in an ambulance from the first, smaller hospital to the larger one, but my dad wanted to drive me. It was the most painful ride of my life.

37. I was supposed to stay overnight in the hospital, but because my mom is a former nurse, they let me go home with her.

38. When I got my wisdom teeth removed, they all fell into my sinus cavity and I couldn't eat real food for 3 weeks.

39. I lost over 20 lbs. and the day I could begin eating again was the day I moved onto campus at college.

40. A week or so after my teeth had been removed, I wasn't allowed outdoors except to walk from the car to the house/church etc. When we went to church in town one weekday, I snuck away to visit my co-workers. We were all custodians and I wanted to see them...I got in SO much trouble for being in the cold and around dust.

41. I was born in Maine. We moved from there to a rural town in central Pennsylvania.

42. Many of our neighbors were Amish people and one of my fondest summer memories is of Amish boys pulling a red wagon piled with sweet corn up and down the road, selling it- delicious!!]

43. When I was in college, I joined an ultimate frisbee team. I just remember being really out of breath from running so much...haha!

44. I would love to have 10 kids.

45. I dream of adopting at least a few children, but not necessarily as infants.

46. If I am not married by 28/30 I plan to adopt as a single parent.

47. I believe that it is better for a child to have one awesome parent than to float from foster home to foster home for their whole life.

48. I would be willing and SO excited to be able to adopt a child with Down's Syndrome.

49. I enjoy most vegetables, especially corn and tomatoes.

50. My blog template comes from Final Sense...isn't it beautiful?

51. I once went Trick or Treating at Stephen King's house-- when we lived in Maine.

52. Stephen King's family went to the same church as my family attended. He has three children who are a bit older than me.

53. In my immediate family, we have three birthdays in February, one in March, one in April, one in May, one in June, and then Sam and Bryan are September and October.

54. I am good with computers, and fixing minor problems related to them-- internet issues, printer hookups, etc.

55. Actually, that is how I met my friend Jess- it was her first semester of college and she was having trouble connecting to the internet. I helped her out and we've been good friends ever since!

56. Another one of my friends, Anna, is coming to town next week and I cannot wait to see her! I think the last time I saw her was in May, when she graduated from college.

57. For the first time in many years, I will not be attending the graduation at my college-- there is no one that I know well who is graduating!

58. I love photography-- mostly snapping pictures of scenery or nature. I have a lot of "favorite" pictures... the rose in my profile picture is one of them.

59. One of my lifetime goals is to visit all 50 states. So far I have been to 26 of them-- Alabama, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Louiiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virgnia, and West Virginia.

61. I am not an animal person-- at ALL. I don't like cats or dogs.

62. I love fish and frogs though-- I'm more of an ocean girl!

63. We've had many pets over the years though-- Dogs: Misty, Star, Rose, Hunter...Cats: Mak, Stormy, Serenity, Bubbles, Diamond, Allie and a million kittens... Fish: Rainbow, Cain, and ton of unnamed ones...Frog: Fruit Loops (he was albino, LOL!)...bunnies: Sally and Muffy...Hamster: Tanner...and we've taken care of a lizard or two, which I thought was awesome.

64. Growing up, I always wanted to own an iguana. My parents got me Tanner the Hamster instead.

65. I always thought that by the time I was 23, I'd be married with 2 or 3 kids.

66. I graduated from high school and college in December.

67. While on my mission trip to New Mexico/Juarez, Mexico a few years ago, I couldn't believe the vast difference between the US and Mexico. If you have never been there, you can see a virtual line where the US and Mexico divide.

68. While on my mission trip to New Orleans last month, I was extremely surprised at how desolate most of the city was. It was truthfully like a ghost town.

69. I am deathly afraid of two things: appendicitis and driving on snowy/icy roads.

70. The best concert I have ever attended was a Michael W. Smith one in August '04. It was just a week or so before my move to Austria, and it was SO powerful!!

71. If I live with my parents this summer, which I am leaning towards, I will probably go back to be a custodian.

72. I just found out that my friend Hope may also be working custodial this summer...which would make it that much more AWESOME!!

73. A few months ago, I tried to order the magazine "Popular Science" and ended up ordering "Popular Mechanics"...for TWO years....crap.

74. Ironically, I did NOT like science in school, ever. But I find PS magazine really cool!

75. I had a biology teacher in high school that I did like...but we didn't get to dissect anything because my teacher and his son were squeamish. LOL.

76. I still think about the 3 Musketeers a lot...I am continually working on cutting them permanently out of my life.

77. I have already picked a few of my children's names out-- Abigail Kathleen Mailee, Dominic Elias, Audrey Mariah Grace, Liam Gabriel. Elias and Kathleen are after my parents' names.

78. I went to the college I did because I felt unable to live with my parents anymore and was only17. The way I remember it, they said it was "this college or wait until you are 18 and go where you want"...that's not quite how they probably said it. ;)

79. I was a strong willed, bossy child. Definitely one of my parents' harder children...and Rachael is following suit at the end of the kid line-up.

80. My mom wants me to try speed dating. I am considering it...but I am not sure I would like to go alone.

81. My boss thinks that I am confident, not scared of anything...it's so not true, but nice to hear. People always have a different opinion of me than I have of myself.

82. When I was about 14/15/16 and last summer, I was depressed. I probably should have been on medication.

83. I used to be a pessimist, but work daily at turning that around and the last few years, have been SO much happier with the glass half full!

84. When I quit my nanny job last summer, I felt like a failure-- after all, I had only been there two months before giving 30 days notice.

85. This is because I am a hard worker and determined to finish important jobs.

86. However, I do NOT regret leaving that job. I was miserable and it was the best decision for me and my mental health. LOL.

87. At my summer nanny job last year, I had a very inconsiderate boss. When I asked to have a meeting with both him and his wife, he crossed the line and called me while at a business meeting to interrogate me. I was so humiliated.

88. I used to write a family "newsletter" when I was about 10. It had a crossword puzzle, news of what was going on in the family, etc.

89. I have been inside a few jails.

90. But not for anything illegal. I was on a mission trip and was ministering to them...it was a bit scary though!

91. My first car was a '92 Honda Accord. I bought it on my birthday in '05 (no, not a birthday present) and owned it for only 20 months. I felt ripped off because it was definitely a lemon.

92. My dad tried to teach me to drive on a stick shift car. I protested enough and was a moody teenager...sooo I still don't know how to drive stick shift.

93. My dad HATES when my mom, sisters and I drive barefoot. He says, "What if a rock/bee flies in the window and you don't have shoes on? That's very dangerous!" LOL...Still, we all do it during the spring/summer/fall...

94. Sometimes I feel closer to my mom's best friends than my own friends.

95. I have known one of my friends for about 12 years, we were really close until she began having sex with her boyfriend, got pregnant, and didn't tell me she was pregnant until she was 1/2 way through the pregnancy. We are getting closer again lately, and for that I'm thankful...but she lives 7 hours away.

96. The first night my current roommate and I lived together, the electricity went out for about three hours, so we lit candles and played cards-- it was actually pretty fun and a great ice breaker.

97. I saw Pope John Paul II three times- once in 2002 at World Youth Day in Toronto, Canada, and twice in Rome, Italy-- at a Rosary outside his window one Sunday and then at the Wednesday audience.

98. I am an easy person to get to know on the surface, but to dig deeper you'd have to spend more time with me.

99. I used AAA the other day for the 2nd time in my life. A woman at Meijer was parked right next to me and she locked her purse, keys, and cell phone in her trunk. We talked for the 45 minutes or so that it took AAA to get there, and it was cool to get to know her!

100. I was watching my brother's girlfriend at the play this afternoon. I was thinking about the fact that one day, hopefully not too far away, my family will expand to include brother- and sister-in-laws. Even though Sam (my bro Sam's gf) is quiet, she's a sweet girl and I think she'd fit in well with my crazy, amazing family.

Lots rolled into one post

My co-worker Aniya is taking a college class- science of some kind. Earlier this week, she came into school and said "So, guess what I did last night in lab?"

"What?"

"Um...I set a fire."

"WHAT?!!" I say in disbelief...this is a careful lady, at least at school!

"Yea...um, so we were working with zinc and I mixed a few things, and they have a protective covering on the counter, but it's PAPER! And yep, it caught fire."

I couldn't really reply, I was laughing too hard.

~~
Earlier this week, I was dealing with a child who has been stealing almost every day these past few weeks. We now have a system (approved by her parents) where we take money from her piggy bank for every piece of work she steals. Friday, she stole work from our room, so I went with her to collect the coins. I put them in our teacher closet, and later in the evening Aniya asks me, "So, what are we going to do with our 35 cents?"

I told her I had no idea, so she shot back, "Well, we could go to Happy Hour after work..." LOL

Can you tell we have fun at work?
~~

On Thursday evening, I did my good deed for the week. I was grocery shopping and as I was putting my purchases in the back of my car, I hear "Oh no! I can't believe I just did that!!!"

The woman parked next to me had placed her groceries, purse, and keys in her car and promptly closed the trunk...yep, locked.

So, I let her use my cell phone and then my AAA card. We spent about a 1/2 hour waiting for AAA so we just talked for a while. Her name was Susan, and she is a S.E. teacher-- so we had something in common.

~~
And a few kidisms...

Trisha: I liked that book about blotherflies! (Butterflies)
~~
Being with the kids during lunchtime, I see some interesting food combinations. Lilahbelle likes to put her straw into her cheddar cheese slices, make a million holes...
~~
Jack puts pepperoni in his water.
~~
Ryan used to put grapes in his water bottle, until I explained to him that was a choking hazard...
~~
I was reading a book on apples, so I quizzed the kiddos-- "What else can we make from apples?" I received the regular answers..."Apple juice" "Apple pie" and then Daley said "Orange juice.."
~~
During one of the colder days, Rolan and I both had the same kind of shirts on...according to him, they are "neck turtle shirts"
~~
In February, Aniya drew a birthday cake on the day of my birthday. Eamon asked why there was a birthday cake, and I explained that it signified my upcoming birthday. He asked how old I was going to be, and I told him 23. "23?!?! Wow!!! That's like a....kid!!!"

Thanks, Eamon!! ;)
~~
Luce: You and Mrs. H both have on red shirts today. You must be twins. Are you twins?
~~
Oh, and this post: the answer is that it was a lunch request between Ian and Rolan. They are eating alligator. I can't imagine where Ian suddenly got that idea...?

My visit to the hospital

A young boy at school recently got hit in the head with a metal baseball bat. The day after the incident happened, I didn't see Eamon all day. I heard rumors that his head hurt and all that, but with kids...you never know. In late afternoon, I ran into Eamon's mom in the school kitchen- she works with me. I inquired about Eamon's head and she confirmed that yes, he had been hit with a baseball bat.

A few minutes later, she sent Eamon back to our classroom to tell me the story while I was cleaning some work. He was with me for a good half hour, a fact his mom was amazed about, until I explained to her that he told me EVERYTHING. Seriously, everything. But it was so cute. Here is his story.

~~
Keep in mind, Eamon is very dramatic, so all of this is said with much arm flailing, flinging himself on the floor, etc.

I was playing baseball at Bradenlee's house. B-Lee is my friend. We were playing baseball and I turned around, but B-Lee didn't know I was there. The bat hit my nose and I went "whoa, whoa" (while Eamon flairs the arms) and then "Bam!" (Eamon falls on the ground)

Teresa ran over to me and said "OH MY GOSH!" and then she said a bad word. Yea, she said a bad word and then she told Alex to call 911!

My mom came and the firemen and the ambulance and they put this thing on my finger (demonstrates) for my...my...

"Pulse?" I say...

Yes, pulse, says Eamon. And he continues.

So I am on a bed in the ambulance and I got to ride all the way to the hospital in it. They gave me ice toput on my head, and it was so cold that my eye closed!!

When we got to the hospital I was so relaxed. We got to watch SuperNanny, and Deal or No Deal, but then my dad wanted to check the basketball scores so we had to do that for a minute but then got to go back to SuperNanny. I wanted to watch that and my mom said I could.

Then they took me to a room where there was a white thing, and IT LOOKED LIKE A THING FROM STAR WARS!!!! (Eamon is all excited describing this).

And I was really relaxed (I'm thinking his mom was NOT!!!) but the nurse said to me, "Now, Eamon, this is the MOST important part. You have to be REALLY, REALLY still." (He proceeds to lie on the floor for a good 5 minutes, very still!

When they were done taking the picture of my brain from the CAT scan, cause that's all I got, no stitches or anything. When they were done, the doctor said "Wow, Eamon, you did a very, very good job lying still!"

So then we got to go back to my hospital room, the one with the tv's? Yea, we got to go back there, and watch more SuperNanny. Then the doctor came in to say things to my mom and dad, but I wasn't paying attention because I was watching the SuperNanny. The doctor told me I could go home but before that he gave me 2 Spiderman stickers and, oh yea! a lollipop too!

And then when we got home, it was past my bedtime, but my mom gave me a bath anyway. Oh, and they gave me a sticky hand at the hospital too, so I asked my mom if I could put it in the bath because it wasn't really sticky. I thought she would say no but she said yes and you know what?

"What?" I ask.

When I put it in the tub, it got even more sticky!

The End

~~
BTW, Eamon is fine. He had no concussion, just a huge purple bump/bruise on his head. His story was just so animated and cute, though!!!

Saturday Bliss

I love Saturdays!

I will be back later this weekend, but I am currently working on my 100 Things About Me Meme...so I might be a little spaced out.

Check back later for:

kidisms
a story about my coworker and fire
a story about AAA
a tale about a 5 year old boy and his hospital experience this week...mostly in his words!

TT: Going Through My Head

I have so much going on in my head lately...

1. I miss my sister Rachael. She spent two days with me this week and I am sad to have her gone. We had fun!

2. I wish I was a mom. It is my greatest want in life, and so unattainable. =(

3. I also wish i had a significant other... I feel so lonely lately.

4. Summer decisions...should I move in with my parents or stay here in the city?

5. One of my friends from college is coming to town next week for a visit. I cannot wait to see her multiple times throughout her visit and catch up with an old friend.

6. I really, really miss my friends. I feel like the ones I have here are "new" and I just don't know them as well, obviously.

7. I have a summer job offer here in the city, but it's only 25 hours a week, not enough to pay the bills. Guess I won't be accepting.

8. I got a RD magazine in the mail today. I should get my butt off the computer and read it!!

9. If I live with my parents this summer, should I pay them for food? LOL.

10. If I live in the city, I could make $200 more (throughout the whole summer) but I feel like gas to my parents throughout the summer would be at least that...

11. If I live with my parents, I will get to enjoy summer '08, which I would LOVE after last summer. I refuse to have a summer like '07 over again. Completely refuse. I looked for an old blog post to show how utterly sad and unhappy I was last summer, but I was SO depressed at the time that I wasn't even writing.

12. I am doing well with the boldness thing this week @ work! Yay!!!

13. I still keep laughing over the lady @ church last week.

-----------------------------------------------------
A few kidisms for this evening

~~
Luce:I haven't done anything bad in my entire life! (She is 5...)
Me: REALLY!?!?! (thinking back to allll the times she's been invited to sit in a chair because she's having trouble listening....)
Luce: Nope! I haven't stolen anything from a store, or been in jail, or stolen someone's car....

(Thinking to myself: well....I guess you've not done anything wrong in THAT way!)

~~
Alessandra, running outside after having an accident and getting her pants changed: Miss S, LOOK!!!!! I have new spring pants!!!! (They were pink, orange, red, etc)

Daley, not to be outdone: And these are my spring summer water ocean pants!!!!

~~

Daley was asked to sit on the bench after repeatedly going UP the slide instead of down. After sitting just 1 second:
I "tink" (think) about it!!! Can I get up now????

What would you do?

Just trying to get some opinions...

Option 1:
Stay in the city where I am now, 2.5 hours from my family
- Our lease is up at the end of June...my roommate will be moving out at that time
- School for me ends June 6
- I would get a job...but don't yet have one or really any leads
- I would have to find a place to live ($$$), plus utilities and rental insurance
- I'd have to live by myself, which I hated last summer, and would be terribly lonely, probably resulting in visiting my family a ton, meaning gas $$$

Option 2:
Live with my parents this summer
- I would get a job (or 2 part time ones?) in the nearby smaller city, so less pay
- But no rent, utilities, etc.
- And being able to spend time with my family since I wouldn't have to travel to see them
- Would end up with about $200 less at the end of the summer than option 1, but when I calculated bills, etc...I did not include food or gas money...

So...what shall I do?

Give Me Five Monday 4/7

Today's Theme:
Give Me Five favorite candies, of all time or currently.

1. Airheads
2. Milkfuls ( I cannot find these ANYWHERE, someone want to send me some?!!?)
3. Chewy sweet tarts
4. jellybeans
5. Snickers bars

Maniac Monday

It's been a busy day. My youngest sister Rachael and I drove into town from my parents' place around 10 am. She's visiting with me until tomorrow, so she tagged along to work as well. She LOVED it! She now has quite a few little followers-- it's hilarious because she is easily 2x the size of some of the kiddos at school but they adore her.

One little boy in particular was funny today. Taylor rarely gets his back rubbed at naptime, but today he said to me, "I want to be rubbed today. I want the little one of you to rub me." LOL...everyone kept commenting on how much she looks like me.

After work, we hit up Pizza Hut for dinner, followed by a grocery store stop for sandwich fixings. The evening ended with a trip to a local ice cream shop. Rachael had cookies n' creme and I chose ginger snap. Now we're winding down-- I'm folding laundry and we're both 1/2 watching "Evan Almighty"

The Woman In Church

When I lived with my parents during my last semester of college, and for a few months following graduation, I would typically choose to attend Saturday evening Mass as opposed to Sunday morning with my family.

After a few weeks of doing this, I noticed a woman. She came every Saturday night, same as me. She stayed just for Mass, and then left, same as me. Still, she was just one of those people that I noticed.

This evening, I went to Mass with most of my family because we are heading to Michigan for Shae's art show tomorrow.

Guess who was there?

Yes...this same woman. As soon as she walked in, I knew I'd have a rough time concentrating during Mass, as I always seem to observe her antics during the service. My brother and his friend Scott also noticed her, and a few times during Mass we had to try not to laugh.

Imagine a woman, I don't know how old. Her face doesn't LOOK old, She has no wrinkles, but wears clothes (a housedress, or light brown colored wide pants with a flamboyant, flowery top tucked into the pants) that suggest she's 60 or 70.

Her hair is always 1/2 way complete, curlers in parts but not others. It looks very unkempt, to say the least.

Before I say anymore, I know this woman has a mental issue. I don't know what, but it's there. And I'm not trying to make fun of her, but find her intriguing.

She sits on the left hand side, towards the front, every time. She walks in, she sits down, and then looks around...again...and again. While looking around, if she catches someone's eye, she smirks. That, in itself, can be distracting. Add to that the fact that during the 1 hour Mass, she uses hand sanitizer at least 5 times. During the readings, you hear snap! as she opens her purse, click! opening the sanitizer, click!, snap! During the homily? same thing. Before the sign of peace? Again. After the sign of peace? Before and after Communion?? Yep, yep, yep!!

Oh, and that's not all.

She laughs. In a silent, but smirky, deadly way. For about 2 seconds-- and then, abruptly, she stops. And looks VERY serious. And then laughs again, you get the idea.

During the homily today, she was very carefully highlighting every word of the bulletin. Highlight one word. Stop. Look around. Laugh. Look serious. Highlight...

And to top it all off?

She took a swigs of cough syrup straight from the bottle multiple times during Mass.

So this whole boldness thing??

It all started with a head to head prayer.

What the hell is that, you ask?

I'll tell ya. It's an exercise that we practiced a month or so ago with my Belize mission trip group. I know it sounds weird, and uncomfortable too. And I'm not going to lie to you. Being a usually private person, especially when it comes to praying, it was both for me the first time.

Basically, head to head prayer is when two people, who don't know each other well or at all, sit down next to each other. At first, both pray silently, until one feels led to pray out loud. This was SO hard for me. You pray for something specific in the other person's life that is on your heart. The first time I did it, the woman I was with (who had NEVER met me before) prayed for me to have boldness, and recognize my talents. Dude, she was so right on!

Boldness was something that I'd been struggling with recently, especially in the area of working. My coworker has been with our school for a few years, and this led to her taking the "lead teacher" role automatically, which I was fine with. I am, after all, more of a "leading follower"...if that makes any sense.

I noticed in the past few months though, that I've become a wimp at work. If I noticed something (ex. fights between the boys, especially our hardest boy and another student), I would step away and let her deal with it. There's no real reason I should do that...it's my job to keep the children safe/ discipline when necessary.

Anyway, after this head to head prayer thing, and it being right on, I've been working on my boldness mostly at work. My coworker won't be around next year (which I am truly very sad about, we get along fabulously and I still can't believe she's leaving :( ....) so I've been stepping up and dealing with it...being bold!!

And there you have the story of the blog name change.

Blog Name Change, Same place!

I decided to change the name of my blog for the first time since I started blogging in 2006. I may switch back to Bethany's Paradise at some point in time, but lately I am striving to be a bit bolder in daily life so it seems like a good fit. More about that later!

The Weekof "Supposed To"

Soo...

We were supposed to return from New Orleans on Sunday. We got back Saturday instead.

On Monday, I was supposed to go running in the park. It rained.

Tuesday, I was supposed to go to Grace Heart, play wolleyball, and go to Cheese's soccer game. Instead, I was struck with fatigue due to sun poisoning, and fell asleep before 8 pm. I slept soundly until 7 Wednesday, when

I was supposed to have an interview for a summer job. I arrived at the school to find out the woman who was to interview me was home sick...the interview needs to be rescheduled.

Today was supposed to be my morning to sleep in. Instead, my phone rang at 7:02, waking me. It was my boss, asking me to come in to work early and sub for another teacher.

What else will this week bring?!?!
