Sunday blahs

I hate Sundays.

I really do. I don't really know why. Today is my only day off allllll week, so I should be enjoying it. And, I guess I am. My old co-teacher Aniya and I went on another fall hike to catch up on each other's lives, which was fun. I took an hour-long nap, but now my day's all outta wack.

Do you get the Sunday blahs?

Since when...

are diabetes, asthma, and seizures communicable diseases?

Sorry...but I just went to a "communicable disease" class, and most of the time was spent with the teacher discussing those three things. Seriously?!!?

On the upside, I am babysitting a 5 week old baby tonight! :)

Firsts of the week

This week has been so crazy, with lots of "firsts"

- first incident report write up for me @ school. Surprising, since this is my 2nd year teaching, but it was one of my luncher/napper/afternoon boys who is 4. Poor Danny hit his head on the climber, but didn't even tell a teacher! His head (right near his eyebrow) was bleeding, and he made not a peep. Probably 10-20 minutes later, I began inviting the nappers inside to use the bathroom before napping, and noticed the bleeding head! He sat up in the office with me (head covered with a paper towel, which had blood on it, but was not bleeding through, for a while, the secretary, my boss, and about 3 other teachers looking in on him to give their opinion on the cut. The parents were called, his dad came, and I wasn't sure what the outcome was until he came back to school today. He got two stictches!

- first 50 hour workweek (plus 7 hour medical class coming up Saturday) in a loooong time

-first time fixing a virus on my secretary's computer

- first time being asked to my secretary's house to fix her home computer

-first time being hired to design a webpage for my school

- first time buying a washer and dryer
and
-first time causing a flood in my kitchen and laundry room because of the above ;)

Thirteen Things I am good at...

**Pictures provided by my students- ages 4 & 5**
I've been feeling a bit down, so I tried to think of 13 things I feel good about...

1. Computers (most of the time!)- I just removed a virus & more from my secretary's computer. Most of the time, when my computer has an issue, I can figure it out. I was even a computer information science major for a while in college!

2. Kids I am a teacher and love it. I love infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school age kids...I love being around them- that's when I feel my best.

3. Driving on long car trips I LOVE to take long car rides (14 hours or so is my longest so far). I don't even mind if I'm by myself, as long as I have music!

4. Math Yes, I'm weird, but I enjoy it! At least, until geometry hit...

5.  Babysitting strangers Friday evening, I babysat for two cuties (ages 4 & 1) that I'd never met before. It was actually fun! I've also done some babysitting for weddings and such. I don't mind, kids are so welcoming ;)

6. Writing Not necessarily on here, but on my Belize blog, and while traveling Europe I recieved a lot of wonderful comments, many people suggesting that I write children's books...eh, not so much.

7.  Keeping in touch I always say that once you're my friend, it's hard to get rid of me. I love quality time with my friends, old and new, and will do almost anything to keep in touch. It is in this way that I've been able to visit extended family in California twice, family I wouldn't have seen otherwise.

8.  Photography I love lots of the photos I snap, and other people seem to as well. My grandfather was a photographer, but I *hated* when he tried to take a straight half hour of photos of our family. I would cherish it now...

9. Paying the bills on time I've never had a late bill..yet, anyway!

10.  Bartering I just bought a major appliance (more on that later!) off of Craigslist, and was able to get the seller down $50 in his price. Yay!

11. Making fast friends I know a lot of people find it hard to make friends, but I really don't.

12. First impressions I can tell within a few minutes how I will get along with someone. Rarely have I been mistaken.

13. Reading I love to read and am a fast reader. If I had the time, I'd read all day long! :)

The Little Things

Have you ever noticed the difference the way a small deed done by someone else affects your day? Someone comments on your blog, waves hello at the park or grocery store, and somehow it makes your day a little brighter?

I had two such incidences yesterday. Truly, if I stopped to count the little instances when someone took a moment to say hello to me yesterday, there would be more than two, so I guess I should say two that struck me more than the others.

I was at work, sitting with all of my non-nappers in the "nap room" when Cara (my co-teacher) ran to the office to print off a few papers for school-- and when she returned to our room, explained that now, somehow, there was a virus on our secretary's computer. WHOOPS! I still don't think she downloaded anything, at least not by accident. It's a virus, not nearly as brutal as the one I had, that was not allowing them to do anything. I left my group of kids at 5, my boss took over closing the building, and I spent two hours working on the computer. I'm going back this morning and feel halfway confident that I can remove the stupid thing. Some of it is gone, but not everything- BUT we can use the internet/Word documents just fine, so that's a huge plus!

As I was finally leaving work, an hour late, my boss could not keep from expressing her thanks and proclaiming, "I have NEVER seen anyone move around on the computer like you do!" I just felt so good, so needed at that moment, and not by one of the kids, so it was a welcome change. We'll see what happens this morning when I try to complete the fix, but my boss really touched me by her praises. Sometimes I think I should have been a computer fixer. ;)

The other incident coming later, as I have to run to work! Just remember, be a blessing by those you are around daily...you never know how much you are affecting them (hopefully in a positive light...).

Need some advice

I've decided the time has come. I can't live like this anymore.

What I'm talking about is my roommate and her boyfriend, who pretty much live together. Mac is 20, Cheese is 21...so they are YOUNG (in my mind, lol!). They "just" started dating in February. Mac and I moved in together in August, and all was fine and well...with the exception of Cheese. Cheese is there ALLLLLLLLL the time. Truthfully. Cheese is at my apartment more than I am! Granted, I work, have a social life, and have been taking babysitting jobs...but at 9:30 am, when Mac is at class and I step out of the shower, I have to keep in mind that Cheese is there. He takes over our apartment, I feel like. He turns the tv up LOUD, even if they walk in the door at midnight. He is there. ALWAYS.

And it bugs me.

I like the guy, as a friend- he is hysterical to be around, and usually a sweet guy, but as a boyfriend to her, he's not the best. They bicker, quite a lot. She gets pissed off at him very easily, but then the next minute they are all lovey dovey. Not the relationship I'd choose for myself (or her!) but I guess that's their choice.

I just need to talk to her...but how? Everytime that I am there and so is she, Cheese is too. I think there needs to be a slowdown in him spending the night (maybe like 1-2 times a week, not SEVEN). And if she leaves for work/babysitting/whatever, he needs to leave too. Sound reasonable??????? Gah...

Seriously though, how do I even begin to bring it up? Write a letter when I'm leaving for the weekend and give her time to process? LOL... I mean, the guy doesn't pay rent, but takes showers, eats our food, doesn't clean up, uses electricity...

How do people deal with this all the time? It's so stressful, feeling like I'm back at the P's trying to hide out in my room. I guess I was very blessed with my old roommate Shayna- never had to deal with this!

No time

All week, when I had no time to sit and write, I was thinking up funny and inspiring blog posts to write. Now that I finally have the time to write, nothing. Gah!

It has been a busy week though. I had two babysitting gigs in addition to my normal work week. The week coming up will be even crazier... about 41 hours at my school teaching, an 8 hour disease class @ the hospital with two of my co-workers, a babysitting job Saturday evening (for baby Casey Taylor), getting together with 2 year old Gracie Jae on Tuesday night, and doing something fun with the Grace Heart group on Wednesday. Whew...

Another fall hike

I've had a pretty good week. It was crazy busy, but I did get a lot of exercise and friend time in!

I subbed two mornings, worked my normal hours throughout the week, had my car in the shop for a day (needs $2500 worth of work...ugh), and met with four prospective babysitting families.

On Friday night, I went to the movies by myself. I don't really mind doing things alone, at least things like grocery shopping and watching movies. Going out to eat is a little harder! Anyway, I went to see Swing Vote- it's at the $1 theater so I figured why not? It was a good movie, as a whole. I don't want to give anything away, but I will say, what the FREAK was the writer thinking with that ending!?! Sheesh... after the movie ended, everyone in the theater looked around in disbelief. Stupid, stupid ending!

Yesterday I ran a few errands, went to church, and had Aniya over for a little while. I've been collecting paper for her from school because her new school recycles and receives money for it. Every few weeks she comes to collect it and we get a chance to catch up on life. In the evening I drove to Shayna, Lyn, and Sonia's house and we walked downtown for some ice cream. The place we ended up was the rival ice cream shop of D's, my all time favorite here in the Big City...but I was willing to try it. It was good, but not nearly as good as D's!

This morning I slept in and read a bit before cleaning the apartment, doing the dishes, and all that fun stuff. Aniya picked me up and we headed off to the park where I've been spending some of my recent weekends. We walked and hiked for a good hour or so- the time goes by a LOT faster when there is someone to talk to! The more I hear her talk about her new school, the more I get the feeling she doesn't love it, and definitely not in the same way she LOVED our school. It's sad, but she also loves her classes and there's no way for her to have both right now. Anyway, we ended up stopping for ice cream at D's, and I had a huge cone of my favorite flavor- chai tea...DELICIOUS!

Just a few pics from today's walk...the trees have REALLY been changing fast around here. I might go back to the park tomorrow after work, or maybe even before if I'm really motivated!

Saying goodbye

Usually, I am the one moving and saying goodbye to everyone. Apparently that's not to be the case in the next year or so...maybe something my mom said way back in '97 makes sense now "sometimes moving is harder on the ones left behind"

Today I was informed by not one, not two, but THREE of my friends that they are or hope to move away from Big City in the next 9 months or so. I guess I should have seen it coming, because one of the girls is my old roomie Shayna and she'll be done with school...so of course she'll be moving back to our hometown, 3 hours away.

One of her really good grad school friends is Lyn- and she and I have become close as well throughout the past year. Lyn and have the same awful sarcastic sense of humor, and when I am around her we have SOOOO much fun teasing Shayna. She will graduate a few months after Shayna and head back to her lonely western state.

And the third one is my old co-teacher Aniya... I have a secret hope that her move won't work out, even though I know deep down that it is probably the best move for her current schooling situation. But, I *just* moved to her apartment complex in August and have enjoyed seeing her a few times a month since then. Sure, it's not the 35/hr weeks we used to have, but I'll take what I can get...and now she wants to abandon me?!

Just feeling a little down tonight...three upcoming goodbyes and learning about all of them in the same day is not fun at all!!!

Fall hikes

I went for an early fall hike this afternoon at a nearby park. Even though the temperatures have been cooler lately, the leaves are just barely changing. I spotted a few chipmunks and squirrels throughout my hour long hike, but they were too fast for me to snap pictures of!

Interestingly enough, I did spot a few remainders of Hurricane Ike, whew blew through here last month. Crazy!!

Saturday Six (10/4)

1. When was the last time you ate fast food? Probably earlier this week, I don't remember exactly!

2. If you get a meal on the run, are you more likely to get something unhealthy, like a burger and fries, or healthy, like a salad? Burger and nuggets, usually. I am NOT a salad person!

3. Of the meals you’ve cooked at home in the past week, have they been generally more healthy or less healthy than what you would have ordered in a restaurant? Eh..about the same I guess!

4. Take the quiz: What Does Your Burger Say About You?

What Your Burger Says About You

You are very gluttonous. Even if you're full, you'll still clear your plate.

You are likely a fairly picky eater. And you're secretly a little squeamish about some foods.

You are very traditional in your tastes. You are unlikely to go for a gourmet burger... and very likely to go for fries.

5. What was the last meal you prepared for yourself? Dinner a few nights ago was chicken and potatoes

6. When was the last time you exercised for more than 30 minutes? Haha, so tempting to say NEVER but I run around with the kids at work!

Saturday Social (10/4)

Today's Saturday Social Question:

Do you like popcorn? What is your favorite way to make it?

My Answer:

I like popcorn alright...but I never think to buy it. I'm not a fan of microwave popcorn but love buttered, salted air popped! Caramel popcorn is pretty darn good too ;)

QOTW

Would you consider moving to another state than the one in which you now live, for a job? Is it as easy as “yes” or “no” or would it depend on the state? Would it depend on the job?

I love my job, and don't see leaving my school anytime soon, so it would take something big (marriage, for instance!) to move me. The state would definitely be taken into consideration. I loved the East Coast, but it was so incredibly far from my family...so I don't know. It would factor in a lot of things but I am always up for a new adventure!

TGIF!

I am so thankful that we're back to the weekend!! My week has just been incredibly crazy, and after Monday's disastrous afternoon...I've been ready for a few days ;)

This past week I attended a Matt Nathanson concert (OMG, hilarious). It was the BEST concert I have ever been to and didn't hurt that I knew all the words to most of the songs. It was an incredible experience that I will never forget.

In addition, I met with three prospective babysitting families. One has two boys (7 & 4), another has three girls (6, 3, and baby) and the third has a little, darling adopted girl who is 2. I really enjoyed meeting all of the families and it looks like they will all be using my services in the future. Thank God! I meet with 3-4 more of them next week too, so hopefully I will be able to build a database and be babysitting regularly to bring in some extra $$, because...

my car needs a transmission (we think). Gah!! My car will be in the shop next week to check for sure, but that's what it seems like anyway. In addition to rotors, new tires, and who knows what else!!

Anyway...I plan to spend my weekend reading the new KK book. I might go for a hike if I feel so inclined, but it will be a quiet weekend, and I'm okay with that. Next week will be crazy too!

Thursday Thirteen

A crazy Monday

Somehow, it's already Wednesday-- and October!!! Wow!

My week is flying by with rapidness...but I have to tell you about my Monday!

Short version of my day:
an explosion of diarrhea and vomit simultaneously happen to two kids at school

Longer version:
It was after nap, and we'd already had kind of a crazy Monday, with two of our kids peeing on the carpet- one deliberate. The nappers were putting their pillows and blankets away and I was dealing with one of them who was being, well Adrien (aka running around the classroom, not doing his work). We noticed the room smelled really bad, over by our rug used for circle time-- it smelled like poo.

All the sudden, one of our little girls starts to vomit; I lead her to the trash can as she continues to vomit and we discover where the poo smell is coming from. One of our little boys had diarrhea ALL over him, the floor, his blanket, pillow...

It was quite the afternoon! Thank goodness for 2 of my co-workers who stepped in to help clean and care for the rest of my kiddles/feed them snack, read them stories while my co-teacher, boss and I cleaned the children and the floor up. I sat in the bathroom, after cleaning up poor puke girlie & changing her clothes, with poo boy, holding his scared, sad little self while my boss tried to clean him up. I felt so bad for the both of them...but man, their timing is impeccable. The rest of the afternoon I spent cleaning cots, work, chairs, tables, spraying EVERYTHING with sanitizer. You can bet I'll be taking my Airborne the next few days. I didn't see my kids from 2:45 until about 4:30 because of all that was going on. I am SO thankful that my boss and co-workers were able to step in and help- they have no idea how much they helped when needed.

So how is your week? LOL.
