Goals

I was babysitting two little boys last night. The older of the two, Drew, is four and a half (don't you dare forget that 1/2!). Drew is just beginning to take taekwondo, and he has been given January goals- things like "listen to your parents", "be a nice big brother", etc. 

Drew decided to give me some goals as well-

1) Do not get out of bed  I usually don't have a problem with this

2) Don't wander off    from where? hehe!

3) Take care of your pets   I don't have any at home but he was talking about all of the animals at school (bunny, guinea pigs, birds, fish, mice, crabs, frogs...)

4) Don't go to the hospital    I will try not to!

5) Stay with your mom and dad    I tried to explain to him that I don't live with my parents but he didn't understand how that could be possible...

6) Be a good teacher    I'll do my best!

7) Do not let kids in your dangerous stuff    Okay then!

8) Keep your room and car clean    This one, I might have a problem with!

So there you have it. Over the next month, these are the goals I am supposed to work on! How are your goals for 2010 coming now that we're at the end of the first month?? ;-)

Job share

I got through the first week of my co-teachers job sharing and truthfully, I only have one word to describe it.

Interesting.

It's not a bad interesting, it's just that my two cohorts are COMPLETE opposites. Cara is an earth-loving, gentle, happy hippy (in the awesome way) and Jessa's much older, been battered by life I guess you could say. She's nice too of course, but they are nothing alike! Having Cara back is seamless, as she and I worked together all of last year and many, many times today we found ourselves reminiscing and laughing hysterically about some event from last year.  Because Jessa's been gone so much this year, sometimes I feel like she and I still don't have it down pat!

I am trying to look on the positive side of this arrangement and that is that I'll have Cara more than half of the week for the rest of the school year. In fact, I don't think that's quite sunk in yet, but I am excited. It's just hard to work with Cara, absolutely love it because it's easy, and then not wish I had her to work with every day. Having someone in the room that automatically lifts cots and tables is foreign to me, but it's awesome! LOL!

So, we'll see how week three goes. Next week will be two days of Jessa, two days with another co-worker and then Cara for Friday due to Cara's other work that scheduled two weeks at a time and was already scheduled when all this came up- so I'm not really counting it! 

On a totally unrelated subject, please pray for a coworker of mine, Jean. She was diagnosed with pneumonia on Wednesday and so I've been working for her- she is a wonderful person but always puts others in front of herself and in the past two days she's gotten worse, not better. Hopefully she'll be able to rest up over the weekend and start recovering, but she could use some thoughts and prayers!

I'm babysitting Chubster now, and falling asleep. I've been on the clock at one job or another for almost 15 hours now and I just want to crawl into a warm bed and sleep until I feel like waking up! I got home late last night after a long day at school. I have one more babysitting job tomorrow night and then I can enjoy a quiet Sunday!

Heading Out

I'm heading out for a few days. I just got a call to sub at my school for today and tomorrow which means working 8-6 and I have events after work both days (one day a concert, one a babysitting job). Basically I'll have no sleep and no time to breathe until Sunday...but it's okay! My paycheck will be nice and I'll be having fun :)

On another note, today officially starts the job share, so keep me and my co-teachers in your thoughts and prayers- we'll see how it goes! I did a lot of organizing in the classroom over the past two days to try and keep things straight so hopefully it will be a seamless switch. :) If  I don't come back for a few days, have a great weekend everyone!

Tattoos...

What are your thoughts on tattoos?

I've wanted a celtic cross tattoo on my ankle for YEARS. Like...12 years. And I'm only 24, so that's half my life. However, around the time I turned 18 I decided to wait a few years to see if I still wanted one.

And I do...

I can't/am really hesitant to get it done on my ankle with teaching, though. If I'd arrived at school with it the first year, it would have been okay, but three years in? I wouldn't be able to wear capris/skirts.

So I am considering getting a celtic cross on the back of my shoulder- is that what it's called?

Anyway...opinions on designs? colors? placement? Some of the ones I'm looking at-

Without the crazy colors in the middle. Not sure what I'd ask for in the middle?

P.S. I really think I like the top one best...hmmm.

All In A Day's Work

I never know what to expect when I arrive at my work- with classrooms full of preschoolers and kindergartners, there's always a child attached to my side within two seconds of walking in the door, someone who needs a new bandaid or can't find their coat/lunchbox, etc.

Today, before a child could find me, my boss pulled me aside with some great news- the realization of last week's assumptions- Jessa will now only be working with me two days a week, and Cara (my co-teacher from last year) will be replacing her the other three!! I am absolutely thrilled and can't wait to finally catch up with Cara, since I've only seen her in passing since May. The two of them job-sharing will be a new adventure, I'm sure-- I've never had two co-teachers alternating in and out of the classroom! It will have its challenges, this I'm positive of- after all, instead of having two people give their input on cleaning practices, books to read, crafts to do with the kids...we'll have three!

In other (related) news, here is the story of the treasure hunt I was sent on last Thursday. If you're my Facebook friend or follow me on Twitter, you might have heard about it a little bit!

I have a running game with my co-worker Cara (ugh, now that "my" Cara will be working with me again, this is going to get confusing!). Anyway, Cara and I like the same ice cream place in central PA, so last summer I brought her some ice cream, then she brought me some. The next time I gave her some, I played a little game with her and made her figure out a puzzle before she could have the ice cream. Right before Christmas, I gave her another half gallon of the prized dessert, but first I sent her a card "from" the ice cream place, hand delivered by one of our students. The student actually told Cara it was a note from her mom, so she unknowingly made the joke that much funnier! Although, then Cara accused me of using the students for my dirty work, hehe!!

Anyyyway, so last Thursday I got some mail at work- very odd in and of itself, since I never get mail there! It was addressed to me, at school and inside was a nice little note...

Well, when I opened the envelope and read it, I knew it was either from Cara or my friend/co-worker Hope but figured ice cream was the ending, thus pegging it on Cara. I was excited to get started on the quest, but we had like 25 kids in my classroom at the time I had to wait over an hour to begin. Cara didn't know we had so many kids, so she scooted out of work extra early, afraid that I was going to come running after her...haha. She told me today (when we finally got to discuss the hunt) that she kept expecting me to call her as soon as I got the envelope, but we were so busy...

Around 5:15pm, our room finally cleared out a bunch and I set off to check all the pencil sharpeners in the school. Of course, it was the last one I looked at, but I did find the next clue!

Okay, so this one took me FOREVER! The first thing I looked at was all the mirrors in the school, thinking the picture of the dog was taped on them or something. Nope.

Then I just wandered around, hoping to see the little dog...anywhere...no.

Eventually, Jessa said, hey maybe it's something with the "gets any colder" part and I set off to the fridge and freezer. Found the ice cream (whoops! haha!) but no dog. Eventually (umm, like after an HOUR!), my boss explained to me that these dogs are from an artist William Wegman and that we have a few of his prints around the school. I found one in Cara & Hope's classroom, but no note. Turns out they have TWO so after taking the first print off the wall a few times and not finding the next clue, I finally turned around and spotted another print and clue next to the fish tank!

After that, the scavenger hunt was over within a minute or two. I didn't want to leave with the ice cream and keep the clues at school, because I knew Cara would find out, so I knew I had to finish...

One of the classrooms has crabs and mice, so I headed there as soon as I read this one. The next clue was taped to the crab tank-

The only classroom I hadn't been to has a fun broom holder on the wall, so I knew just where to look-

After hearing my tale of the treasure hunt today, Cara just laughed and said, "Ohhh I got you goooood!!!!!" Uh yea, you did, Cara...but I'll think of something bigger and better for you next time. Any ideas? ;)

A Week In February

I know it is their eleventh stair that creaks.

I know which part of their ceiling leaks when it rains, and where to find buckets when it does so.

I've finally figured out how the sound system works for DVDs and the TV.

I can work their trash compacter, have turned on and off the water heater, and have watched the house cleaners do their job.

I've driven their car, taken their son to church and parties.

I've had friends over while watching their son.

He's met my boss and most of my friends.

I've had hours-long and day-long jobs caring for Chubster...

but February will bring something more, something bigger, something exciting!

Chubster's parents are going on a weeklong business trip and asked me if I'd mind staying at their house and taking care of Chubster. Of course, I said absolutely yes! I am SO excited. Not only will I get to spend time with one of my favorite little buddies, LOTS of time, I'll get him ready for daycare and enjoy picking him up after I work. As an added bonus, I get to leave work early to get him (haha!) and miss a staff meeting that's technically mandatory. I can't wait for a week of playing Mommy!

A Sunday Confession

I have a confession, and since it's Sunday, it seemed like a good day to open up to you all.

I have the HARDEST time going to church by myself lately. I can do everything else solo- shopping (of any kind), eating out, going the mall, the movies, etc., but when it comes to church...

:(

I do not mind going with friends. Problem is, I'm Catholic and I have NO Catholic friends in the same city anymore. I used to- my roommate Shayna and I used to go to church together every weekend, which was awesome. But then again, we hung out together all the time anyway.

Any suggestions for getting through this? I've already tried the Catholic Young Adult group here and it was, sorry to say, very pitiful.

To my credit, I've gone to church pretty much every weekend in the past two months, aside from the day I had to fly to NJ for my grandpa's funeral and two weeks ago when I was so sick I was sleeping at every Mass time (literally). Before that my church attendance may or may not have been a little more spotty.

The only thing I have found lately to work is either to go to church before a babysitting job Saturday night or reward myself after a church service gone solo. Which is what I'm off to do today. Sigh.

Work Update

I cannot believe that February will be here in just a little over a week! There are big changes coming at work, at least my coworkers and I are assuming there are. My co-teacher Jessa was gone all of last week, got to work late Tuesday, left early Wednesday, got there WAY late Thursday (we start at 11 and she got there close to 2 pm) and wasn't at work at all Friday because that's her day "off". Anyway, I have coworkers asking me if this job is just a hobby for Jessa, telling me that because our sign outside the door that proclaims "Miss S & Miss B" keeps falling down, something needs to be done with one of the people, and they're not talking about me...another coworker told me that she thinks my boss is finally feeling the discord between the employees and Jessa, so that's a positive. Jessa and my boss had a long talk Thursday afternoon and then I barely saw her, so it will be interesting to see what comes of it! Cross your fingers for me next week, okay?? I was planning to talk to Jessa this past week to see if she'd be interested in a job share type thing with Cara (my coteacher from last year) but since she wasn't around much this past week, that was next to impossible.

Soo, we'll see what happens!!!

Dave Ramsey Update!

It's a slightly exciting day here and for once, I have a positive Dave Ramsey update! I haven't been sticking to my January budget too well, but...

today...

- I have an emergency fund of $1000

- I paid off my computer!!

- I paid off my lowest credit card (which had a balance of only $261 but still....)

YAY!!!


I've updated my sidebar information-- so far, I've paid off $1207.

Small steps, but I'm getting somewhere-- celebrate with me?!?!

I teach preschoolers and kindergarteners- this is my third year doing so and I LOVE it. The kids are at such a fun age, exploring and learning something new every time I turn around. They love to be read to, make crafts, paint, do beadwork, ask questions...most days, I really enjoy my job and hanging out with the kids.

The parents though?? Oh, don't get me wrong. There are some parents that I absolutely LOVE! After my grandpa died, a few of the moms I'm closer to hugged me, told me to be sure and let them know if there's anything they can do. One took down my address to send me information about bereavement (she works for a nursing home). After Christmas break, at the beginning of the school year- these moms and I truly catch up with each other and it's wonderful.

And then...we have some parental gems.

The mother who is convinced that her son is absolutely fine, despite four teachers and the director of the school telling her differently- a son who, compared to his sister three years younger has made no progress since coming to our school and wanders around his classrooms, tripping over other children's work every chance he gets, unable to focus on even the simplest tasks.

The father who enters my classroom, does not even muster a hello, and sits on the tables. I've had his son for three years.

The mother who asks us if we've seen her daughter's bracelet-- that her daughter left at school months ago.

The mother who wanted her son to wear pullups and have a bottle of juice at naptime (he's 5).

The mother who asked us to make sure her daughter eats everything in her lunchbox, even if it takes her past the alloted lunch time. If the child does not eat everything, the child will be punished at home, even if she just wasn't hungry.

The mother who comes with a new "request" for her children every time she enters the room. I know they are your precious children, and we love them too, but we have 20+ other kids to care for.

The mother who wants to know if her child (skinniest kid EVER!!) is obese.

The mother who wants us to monitor every calorie her child eats.

The mother who asks us to make sure her son eats his whole lunch since otherwise he is crabby when she picks him up. Because her child was playing at lunchtime instead of eating, I move him to a one person table where he can focus on eating and eating only. One week later, the child says his mother says he doesn't have to eat his whole lunch anymore and his mom wants him to enjoy lunchtime with the other kids. We tell him until his mom tells us otherwise, he's eating alone. One day later, his mom stops me in the hall to say just what he told us-- he doesn't have to eat his whole lunch anymore. WHAAA??

The dad who tells, does not ask, us to dress his daughter for ballet. If he asked, sure.

The parents who decided that to celebrate their only child's birthday at school, they would bring in massive cupcakes with icing two inches high, show a slideshow of the child's life and invite every relative within a 100 mile radius to join the party. (We encourage a small treat and a small family representation...parents, siblings, maybe grandparents. This kid had cousins, aunts, uncles, the whole bit! There was barely room in the classroom for the children who belonged in the class!)

The parents who are continually on cell phones while picking up their children, buckling their children in the car, sitting in the parking lot talking, driving off talking...they haven't seen their child in 10+ hours and it makes me so sad!

and, while this isn't a student's parent...my co-teacher said to me after hearing I had strep,

"Oh, so you were out all week then."

Uhhh no...I'm not you! (She was just out for 7 days...again)

Spring Break!

In a month, I'll take on a week-long babysitting/house-sitting gig, which I am EXCITED beyond words about. So excited, in fact, that I'm going to write a post all about it tomorrow or Monday-- but more on that later.

Said babysitting/house-sitting gig will (hopefully!) enable me to take a spring break trip this year, if I'd like to. And I would, of course, because have I EVER been one to turn down a trip?? Ummm, Nope!

Really, all I'd love for a week in March, when the weather is cold, is someplace warm. Or a cruise. Which yes, I'm okay with going on alone. As I told my mom, I'd be going for the sun, to read in the sun, and to look at the ocean in the sun. Haha...

So- does anyone have any favorite southern places to suggest? I'd LOVE to hit the Key West- definitely on my to-hit list but that may not be feasible this year.

Still Alive!

Wowwwww! Sorry for disappearing for the whole week there, that was not my original intention but man alive, that sickness really knocked me down! I'd never had strep before...WOW is it miserable. Keep one of my coworkers in your thoughts, she has strep for the second time in less than four weeks! Probably caught it from me...poor girl.

While I am definitely feeling better, my week has been very low-key. I went back to work Tuesday but not for the whole day. Wednesday I was feeling pretty good and did make it the whole day, but then yesterday I left early too. I've been sleeping lots, taking my medicine, and working- that's literally IT. Nothing fun, no babysitting and trying to learn how to take it easy. I am babysitting tonight and it should be interesting because I could easily be here until 12/1 when I've been dead asleep by 10:30 or earlier all week. In addition, I have to get up at 6 tomorrow morning to head to another town with one of my friends for our quarterly catch up session but I figure worst case scenario, I can chug chai and when we get back to BC in the late afternoon I can just crash. Haha!

So anyway, I'm still alive and have not abandoned the blog! I'll be around to all of yours shortly, and hopefully be back for good soon.

Tale of Sickness

On Saturday evening while babysitting, I began to get a sore throat. No biggie, I thought. I was up a lot of the night and around 8 am gave up on sleeping. I ran to the store and got some grapefruit seed oil my mom has been recommending. After just one dose and a nap, my throat felt so much better. I didn't have a fever or anything but did have a bad headache- it was hard to even lift my head, so I spent the day literally in bed until 5pmish.

Fast forward to 10 pm- I started to feel really tired so I went to bed and slept until 4 am, when I woke up with a 101.5 fever. I left a message at my work saying I wouldn't be in today (we work with kids and have to be fever free for 24 hours). I fell back asleep but woke up around 5 and 6 and decided to give up on sleep. At 6 my fever was at 102.0 so I took some meds for that hoping it would come down. I'm heading to urgent care pretty soon, they open at 8 am and I'll be there...hoping they can get me some meds, because I'm just miserable.

Update: They diagnosed me with strep throat and a sinus infection. Double whammy!

Weekend Kid Funnies

It's another snowy, cloudy, dreary day here so I thought I'd share some of the kidisms lately from school. I know I need some laughs!

Adam: Yes! Miss Macnamamia (not her real name but that's how it sounds to them!). I LOVE HER! I looked for her every day at Starbucks!!

Snow Day #1!

Due to about 5 inches of snow that fell yesterday while I was working, the roads were a mess on my way home in the evening. My commute usually takes about 10 minutes- I didn’t go above 25 mph at all and it took about a half hour. That’s not terrible considering some people were on the road for hours but it made me hope for a snow day.

However, by the time I got home, it had stopped snowing and other than random tiny flakes coming down every once in a while, the snow didn’t start up again by the time I went to bed. I randomly woke up at 4:30 this morning and decided to check just for the heck of it, but schools still weren’t closed. I woke up again at 6 and they were--- I’m guessing that the roads are still not clear and that’s why, since we definitely haven’t gotten more than 5 inches or so.

I’m excited for my free day! This week has been really stressful (gosh, I feel like SUCH a drama queen lately) and I have a list of things to get done this weekend. I do have to babysit tonight and tomorrow afternoon/evening but I’m sure I can cram in some movie watching and reading as well! Oh, never mind. Hope just asked if I want to go use some of our gift cards around town—heck, if she’s willing to drive on the roads to come get me, I have no problem with that! ;) 

Seriously?

I am SO done with the whole Jessa thing. It's been our first week back to school since break-- she left early Monday, early today, will be out tomorrow through all of next week...I'm just SO frustrated with it. I'm tired of working with someone who's not there more than a third of the time, I'm tired of being the one who has to lift all the tables and I'm tired of starting naptime late because she and my boss are chit chatting away when they are supposed to be putting cots down. Sure, she's nice and I enjoyed working with her in the beginning, but it's getting to the point where I don't even care anymore. I'm tired of the excuses. I'm sorry about her medical issues and divorce crap, but if she even had an inkling of what this was going to be like, I sure hope she wouldn't have accepted the job or signed a contract. I'M FED UP!!!

On the upside, I talked to my old co-teacher Cara last night after she called my school to tell my boss she's done student teaching now and can help with subbing. This morning, she was at school to help in another classroom and she'll be helping me out twice next week while Jessa is gone. A consensus between all of my other coworkers and myself is that my boss should let Jessa go and hire Cara back for the rest of the school...oh, how I would love that. Cara and I get along so well and it was great to see her...but at the same time it was so sad because I really miss working with her and I'm reminded that I've had it GREAT the last few years in regard to co-teachers. In the same breath, I know bringing Cara back full time will never happen because my boss's relationship with Jessa is much stronger than hers with Cara and, as Cara said, my boss is too nice to fire someone in the middle of the year. Right now, I wish that weren't true.

It sounds like a daytime soap, I know...

Snowwww

Yea, and my Google Reader is on overload. I haven't even looked at it in days, probably closer to a week. I get home from work and am beat, not to mention just in a sad and crappy mood every day. It's been snowing here for 11 straight days (read it online, I believe it though) and it's so dreary that I'm seriously concerned about depression. I've struggled with it multiple in the past and always have to work hard, especially in the winters, to keep it at bay. This year, I'm on overload between Grandpa's death, having no friends or social life, working and babysitting my butt off, my roommate being constantly standoffish and seemingly disgusted with me for no reason, money and car stress, and the whole Jessa mess. I'm at the end of my rope.

1 Month & 365

Today marks one month since my Grandpa died. It still seems so weird to me. I mean, he was a part of my life from day one, and even when he moved to the nursing home a few years ago and wasn't his old self, the physical presence of him was still there, if that makes sense? I've been silently marking the passing of time- every day, multiple times, I'll think to myself, "oh, it's been three weeks...", "wow, 25 days...", etc. So a whole month seems so long, but so short. So much has happened since his death- the last day of school for 2009, Christmas, New Years, countless babysitting jobs- life goes on, but the thought of him is present every day.

I have family videos I borrowed from my parents' house- they are taped by him, so he's rarely seen but his voice is there. When I arrived back in Big City late last month, I set them on a table to be watched at a later date. Yea, they are still sitting there. I don't know why, but I can't bring myself to watch them yet.

So, yep. I've been in a weird funk all day. I guess that's okay?

In other news, I'm trying to take a photo a day for a year to document my life-- I actually started on December 31st (only because I happened to take a picture that seemed good enough). I can't post some of them but here are the ones I can share!
